How to Choose the Right Industrial Slitting Blade

Four decisions that actually matter when you spec a circular slitter blade — geometry, material, dimensions, and when to reverse-engineer instead.

Slitting blades decide the quality of every roll that leaves your line — film, foil, paper, nonwoven, or rubber. Pick the wrong geometry or material and you get edge chipping, webs that won’t separate, and unplanned downtime. This guide covers the four decisions that actually matter when you spec a circular slitter blade.

1. Match the blade geometry to your material

Thin, ductile films need a razor-sharp, low-angle edge and often a crush-cut or shear-cut pairing. Thick board and corrugated need a heavier blade with more backing support. Abrasive webs — nonwoven, glass-fibre, mineral-filled films — blunt a standard steel edge within hours, so they call for a carbide or coated edge. The single biggest mistake we see is reusing a “general purpose” blade across materials it was never meant for.

2. Pick the right blade material

MaterialBest forEdge life
HSS (High-Speed Steel)General paper, film, light foilGood
D2 / SKD11Abrasive webs, long runsVery good
Tungsten CarbideNonwoven, glass-fibre, mineral fillExcellent
StainlessFood, pharma, washdown linesGood (corrosion-safe)

If you are not sure which grade your line needs, send us the application and we will spec it — our free sample program lets you test the actual edge on your machine before committing to a production order.

3. Get the dimensions right

Outside diameter, inside diameter, thickness, bevel angle, and the location of any mounting holes or keyways all change how the blade seats and cuts. A 0.1 mm error in bore size can cause runout that ruins an entire shift. Send the drawing — or a photo with a ruler — and we will confirm every dimension against your arbor.

4. When to reverse-engineer instead of re-order

If your worn blade has no drawing on file, don’t guess. Our reverse-engineering service measures the physical sample, redraws it with full GD&T, and sends the drawing back for your approval before any steel is cut.

Why we make slitting blades to your drawing

Every custom slitting blade we ship is made to the customer’s drawing or worn sample. Quote within 24 hours of receiving the drawing, sample in 7–10 days, 30-day production lead counted from drawing approval. Free sample — you cover the freight.

Next: send your drawing or a photo of the worn blade on the contact page.

Working on a mask or nonwoven line? The mask machine blade size chart and the air scissors cutter heads cover the parts those machines actually consume.
